Mrs. Awtry's 1st Blog
I have a vision of how I want this blog to work.  I want to be able to give an assignment in class then have the assignment discussed and worked out on this blog.  That students would be able to help each other with assignments and studying for tests.

Another vision I have is that I have a better way to keep and get in touch with my students.  I realized this was a serious problem when I wasn't comfortable with having a Semester Final after a snow day and a weekend.  I did post it on my webpage but I knew not many students didn't look at it daily.  Why would they?  I don't update it every day and remind them to check it.  What I did do was tell my son to post it on his Facebook page, "Mom says no final tomorrow."  I knew then there had to be a better way, especially since he is a senior.

Right now, I am doing as instructed in the class I am taking, blog myself.  Here is my first blog.

'Social studies is the integrated study of the social sciences and humanities to promote civic competence." Simply put: Humans are a social beings that need to be together, and learning the how, why, where, and history of how we live together is what social studies is all about.  Learning about ourselves, our social needs, and history helps us make knowledgeable choices for our community, state, country, and world.

Garner-Hayfield students have a great opportunity to learn the social sciences with a good range of classes.

I teach American Government, Economics, Western Cultures, Asian Cultures, Psychology, and Sociology.  Mr. Smith teaches American History, World History I, and World History II.  Together, students get a great opportunity to learn about human beings and our world.

Social Studies classes are mostly lecture courses and what most college classes are like.  Come to class ready to take notes and to discuss the topic of the day.  Attendance is CRITICAL.  When you miss class, you miss the lecture, the notes, and the discussions, and it is very difficult to get all you need for test and quizzes from someone else's notes.

God Bless the United States!
